Artistic Purpose

The artistic purpose of Songlines is to strengthen the Victorian Indigenous music sector by acting as a statewide peak music body to represent, develop and advocate for Victoria’s Indigenous musicians.

Songlines is Victoria’s Aboriginal music peak body. Songlines provides opportunities for Victorian-based Indigenous musicians and performers to develop skills, showcase their artistic abilities and engage with the arts sector at an industry standard. This is achieved through artist support and development programs for emerging and established artists, festivals and events and partnerships with mainstream arts organisations.

Being the music capital of Australia, Melbourne is leading the way of progress and reconciliation with the increase of Indigenous involvement in various festivals and events. Providing valuable opportunities for Indigenous artists to profile, network and represent alongside mainstream projects and working to industry standard is a key artistic focus for Songlines. Housed with 3KND Koorie Radio, Songlines is Melbourne’s focal point for those wishing to engage with the Victorian Indigenous music industry.

Songlines holds some of Victoria’s largest Indigenous music events; providing a valuable contribution to Indigenous social development through the arts by promoting ownership, cultural pride and conservation, recognition, contribution and unity. Our dedicated youth program is a seeding ground for tomorrow’s Indigenous art and artists.

Songlines artistic aim is to promote, support and present contemporary Indigenous music, arts and culture and to stimulate dialog around the role of Indigenous arts in Australian culture. This provides a platform for artists to be a voice of the Indigenous community, which in turn will contribute to the overall voice of Australia.

“The voice of the artist not only records, but shapes attitudes, plants seeds and facilitates change. The voice of the artist facilitates the voice of others.” Richard Frankland
